It doesn’t matter how rigid your cleaning routine is, there’s a chance that you haven’t gone through absolutely everything in the house. Life in lockdown has led to more people paying attention to what their home routine is and there are some clear changes that need to be made. Not only do you have the outside chores to clear up, but you have to make sure that you go room to room and catch every single speck of dirt and dust. You have more time on your hands now than ever, so what can be done?
Here’s the thing, your house is likely not as clean as you think it is. You can scrub and scrub but while you’re busy cleaning and decluttering every visible surface and space in your house, the key here is the word “visible”. You’re not cleaning the stuff you cannot see – and that’s where you’re going wrong!
Baseboards, Oh Baseboards!
Mopping and vacuuming the floors are a must when it comes to cleaning the house, but you need to think about a little more than that. Around the edge of the floor are your baseboards, and it’s likely you haven’t shown them some love in a while. Get the antibacterial spray and use knee pads to keep your knees from getting too sore while you’re down there. You need to bring some clean clothes, too, and you can go around the house and wipe off all the dust and stains.
Slide Those Doors Back
You could be on your hands and knees every week cleaning the windows and French doors, but are you cleaning the window and door tracks? Most people miss out on this so don’t worry, you’re not alone. You can have the spotless glass but the tracks are going to keep your house filthy if you don’t clean them out. Use a vacuum and dry toothbrush to get rid of all of the debris. Then, spray a gentle cleaning spray and wipe it down to get rid of all the grime that gathers along the track.
Get Into The Laundry Room
If you give your washing machine a clean through every week, then you need to think about getting to the back of the washer and then turn your attention to the dryer. A lot of people miss out on dryer vent cleaning, but getting rid of the lint will prevent fires and keep the dryer as clean as possible. It’s one place you really shouldn’t miss out on when you are looking for new places to clean, as it’s a hazard if it’s not cleared out often.
The Cooker Hood
When was the last time you looked up when you were cooking? Mhm, thought so! The stove hood can gather a lot of grease and dust, so use hot water and a little baking soda to soak the fans and use a cloth to clean down the hood. It’s easy to leave out as it’s usually out of your eyeline, but you need to give it a clean to keep your kitchen looking lovely!
Grimy Garbage Disposals
No one can see the grime that gathers in the garbage disposal and so few people actually look at it! The smells in your garbage disposal come from half-rotting food, and there is nothing nice about that. Disconnect the power and use some spray, rubber gloves and a pressure washer to get through the muck. Clean the sink stopper, too, while you’re there!
Pull The Refrigerator Forward
Under the refrigerator lives dust, crumbs and plenty of other things that get trapped under there. You need to pull the whole refrigerator out and make a point of getting under there with the vacuum cleaner and the mop, and you won’t have to worry about having a filthy floor under the refrigerator anymore. Don’t scratch the floor when you move it forward, and make sure that you scrub away at all of the debris before you push it back into place.
Dust The Walls & Ceilings
Yes, dust can gather on these surfaces, even if they are above your head. Dust is so fine it clings to anything, so gravity doesn’t have much of a say! The pollutants that build up as a result can cause illnesses and sickness, and neither of these things is fun to deal with. Clean the walls and ceilings with a duster and use a duster on a stick for the ceilings!
