Have you ever heard somebody say the phrase: ‘they have mental health?’ – usually, this means the person is saying that the person they are referring to has poor mental health, or mental health issues. The phrase is used a lot, and it goes to show what a poor understanding of mental health many people actually have. Every single person has ‘mental health’. Every single person can also develop mental health issues if it is not properly cared for.
Even if you feel like your own mental health is fine, paying special attention to it every once in a while can make a huge difference to your mood and outlook on life. Let’s take a look at how you can care for your own mental health:
Journal
Journaling is a very powerful method of improving your mental health and understanding yourself better. You don’t need to make pretty journal entries, either – you can simply scribble whatever is in your head, without censoring. This is a better way of journaling for a lot of people, as you don’t need to think or self edit, and you can really get to the bottom of the way you feel.
Practice Self Care
Practicing self care as often as you can will help you to feel much better about yourself. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with showing yourself some love, even if you’ve been raised to believe that it’s selfish! So, what could self care entail? It could be:
- Taking luxurious baths
- Making yourself delicious meals and eating them slowly, savouring every mouthful
- Dressing in an outfit you love, just because
- Slathering your body in oil or cream
Every day can be a special day if you make it so. You don’t need to save things for ‘best’. Treat yourself now – you deserve it!
Meditate
If everybody meditated, chances are, there would be very few problems in the world. Meditation encourages mindfulness. It can improve creativity, decrease stress, and even help you to develop your intuition.
Eat Foods That Make You Feel Good
You don’t need to eat a perfectly healthy or clean diet. Eating food that makes you feel good is key – but don’t kid yourself. You might like chocolate and ice cream, but chances are, if you eat a whole tub of Ben And Jerry’s you’ll feel pretty rubbish afterwards. Listen to your body and eat everything in moderation!
Learn To Identify Your Feelings
Learning to identify your feelings can be tough, but it will help you to become more self aware. There are groups and clinics you can attend to get professional help with this – learn more here. It’s often uncomfortable at first, but it’s worth it!
Know That You Are Capable Of Change
If you want to change, you can. You don’t have to be who you were yesterday. It’s often our own beliefs and thought patterns that hold us back. Change your mindset, change your life!
Spend Less Time With People Who Are No Good For You
People don’t necessarily need to be classic ‘toxic’ people or narcissists for them to be no good for you. If somebody makes you feel awful whenever you spend time with them, stop. You don’t owe anybody anything.
