Many of us neglect our garages, using them as nothing more than a dumping ground for possessions we no longer need. Restoring your garage could help you to turn it into a more practical space – whether this means somewhere to store your car, a personal workshop, a home office or even an extra bedroom. Here are just several steps to take when restoring your garage.
Take The Time To Declutter
If you want to put your garage to better use, you’ll need to first get rid of all the clutter. Take the time to sell, donate, recycle or chuck any belonging you no longer need. Any items that you do want to keep can stay put or be relocated to somewhere more convenient (such as a shed or a loft). Decluttering isn’t easy and you may want to get somebody to help, both to sort through stuff and help persuade you to part with items that you don’t need.
Clear The Dust and Cobwebs
If you’ve used your garage as nothing more than a dumping ground, you could find that there is a lot of dust and cobwebs. Get the vacuum cleaner out and give the area a deep clean. This is best done when all of the clutter is out.
Fix Up The Floor
Your garage floor may need fixing up if it’s got stains that won’t shift or unsightly scuff marks. If it’s just a concrete floor, you may be able to simply paint over it with epoxy paint. Alternatively, you could lay down some floor tiles or some vinyl.
Get Your Garage Door Working
If your garage door hasn’t been used for a while, there could be a chance that it no longer works properly as springs may have seized up. Consider repairing or replacing your garage door so that you can start using it. If you choose to replace your door, you may want to consider upgrading to smart garage door that can opened and shut with your phone. For something more rustic meanwhile, you could install some old-fashioned barn yard doors.
Improve Your Storage Options
Can garage cabinets help you get organized in 2020? If you’ve got lots of belongings in your garage that you’d like to keep onto such as tools and equipment, cabinets could be great for keeping these organized and contained. You could also consider hanging items on pegboards, racks or magnetic strips.
Consider Repurposing Your Garage
As stated in the introduction, a garage doesn’t have to be somewhere to park your car. It could be a workshop, a home office, a study, a greenhouse, an extra living area, a personal gym or even an extra bedroom. Renovating your garage into a liveable space may involve investing in heating, lighting, insulation, new flooring and other improvements to make it cosier. However, you could add value to your home by doing this (especially when turning a garage into an extra bedroom).
