Many of us have found ourselves in new circumstances thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic. While some people always spent a lot of time at home, for others, the home is a place to just lay their head and store their belongings: they were always out doing something. But that’s changed now: we’re all indoors! And some people have discovered some hard truths; for example, that they’ve been too reliant on takeout foods and restaurants for their meals. The good news is that being forced to stay home is an excellent way to give your culinary skills a boost. We take a look at a few useful tips that’ll push you in the right direction.
Create the Space
If you’ve not been using your kitchen as much as you could have, then the first thing you’ll want to do is to improve the space. This might not sound like the most important step of the process but trust us: it’ll make everything much easier. There’s a huge difference between trying to cook in a cramped or dirty space, and trying to cook in a place that’s pleasant. If nothing else, you’ll simply enjoy cooking more.
Upgrade Your Tools
Not all cooking tools are created equal. A knife is not just a knife! You’ll find that the act of preparing a meal is much easier if you have quality items in your kitchen. Slicing up your vegetables and meats can be a laborious experience, or it can be smooth — it all depends on the knife that you’re using. You may also want to invest in new pots and pans. There are some ingredients that really thrive in certain types of pans (not just any will do!). A blender and slow cooker will also open up your cooking possibilities, too.
Step Up Your Recipes
One thing that puts people off cooking is that they’re invariably unimpressed by their own creations. It’s not pleasant to spend an hour in the kitchen, and then discover that it’s not as tasty as you hoped. If you find yourself in this position, then look at new recipes. There are plenty of delicious, easy to make recipes out there. Some meals just require a little bit more taste, too. Learn how to make quick pickled red onions at home, for instance, and you’ll have a topping that can transform your standard dishes for the better. It could be that you’re actually pretty good at cooking, it’s just you need to improve things only slightly. You can find inspiration for new dishes everywhere: online, in magazines, and from friends.
Treat it Differently
Finally, you’ll find it much easier to improve in the kitchen if you’re not fighting against it all the time. Don’t think of it as a chore! Make it fun. You’ll improve significantly once you embrace all the possibilities. You can make it more enjoyable by doing things like playing music, opening a glass of wine, and setting enough time aside so that you’re not in a rush.
