Food can be the thing that binds us together. Having a healthy relationship with food can change your life in so many ways, open you up to new cultures and naturally makes you feel a bit better in yourself. But with all the wonderful food out there we can hit speed bumps in the road. Sweet treats can take us down a rabbit hole of unhealthiness. But we’ve got to remember that when we are undergoing a change or trying to be healthier with our food we’ve got to focus on having a good relationship with sweet treats, which can be easier said than done. But what are the ways we can do this?
Making Your Own Sweet Treats
When we buy food off the shelf we don’t appreciate the effort or the ingredients that go into it. When we start to make our own treats and cakes, especially those really rich indulgent cakes with German chocolate frosting, it can make you appreciate the amount of sugar that goes into these things. When we eat a chocolate bar or drink a can of cola we don’t see how much sugar goes into it. And once we start to realize how much sugar we are consuming we can then eat better portions. By making your own sweet treats you’re also investing your time and effort into the process, meaning you will enjoy it more. Because there’s so much choice out there we can very easily go overboard with sugary snacks.
Treat Desserts As A Treat
Due to the never-ending choice of sugary substances on our supermarket shelves we’ve got to change our relationship with sugar. We have to remember that desserts have no nutritional value. And while this means that we’ve got to cut down on our sugar intake once we start to view desserts as a little treat it’s enough to satisfy our sweet cravings but it also gets us into the habit of viewing it as a nice way to finish off a three-course meal.
Filling Up On Other Foods
Increasing your protein intake and putting whole grains in your diet will make you feel fuller. By focusing on more fiber, this will help you to feel fuller so you don’t feel the desire for sugary treats as much. And if you eat until you are full but still need a little sweet treat, you can use natural sweeteners. Things like honey or maple syrup are sweet but they also increase your satiety. Processed white sugar doesn’t satisfy us which is why we crave more.
Sweets are a part of the food landscape. It’s hard to escape from them which means that we’ve got to tackle our relationship with the sweet treat. If you can focus on eating healthily 80% of the time, the remaining 20% can be dedicated to desserts and sugar. The more healthy you eat, the better you will feel. And when you eat sugar you don’t feel so great! We have to remember that desserts are a celebration. This is why we have birthday cake or they finish off an amazing meal. And if you are someone that can’t stop you’ve got to change your relationship with it.
