There are chemicals around us all of the time. In our homes, there are chemicals in the cleaning products that we buy, on the finishes of our clothing, in our toiletries and being emitted from our waste. Even those of us that try to be careful, purchasing natural products as much as we can, are probably being exposed to more chemicals than we might think.
For some of us, perhaps those with breathing problems, or skin conditions, these chemicals can be harmful. Others might not show symptoms, but it can be hard to know what affects all of this exposure to chemicals may be having on our bodies long-term.
Unfortunately, when we’re out of our homes, there is only so much that we can do to limit our exposure to chemicals and other harmful substances. But, in our own houses, there is plenty that we can do to control things. Here are some tips to help you.
Stop Using Bug Sprays

Use Natural Cleaning Suppliers
For years the manufacturers of cleaning products have tried to tell us that chemicals are the best way to kill bacteria and fight dirt. This isn’t true. Cleaning products which use only natural ingredients can be just as effective, and they usually smell better.

Start Reading Labels
Don’t just assume that something is chemical-free because it has the word “natural” or “friendly” on the bottle. Get into the habit of reading labels, and know what chemicals to look out for in the ingredients lists.
Reduce Your Waste
Waste can lead to harmful toxins being released into the atmosphere. Try to reduce your household waste by using reusable drinks bottles, containers, bags and other items, and by shopping more mindfully.
Buy Organic Textiles
Your clothes might be finished with chemicals, and the materials or processes used may contain toxins. You know that “new clothes smell” well, that’s not always from natural sources. Try to only buy organic textiles, and learn more about the processes of the brands that you love the most.
Leave Your Shoes At The Door
When you enter your house, you bring a little of the outdoors in with you, on your hair, your skin, your clothes and your shoes. You can’t avoid all of this, but leaving your shoes at the door can be a big help. It means that you aren’t treading all of those toxins into your carpet, or spreading them around your home.
You may not think that you have been affected by exposure to toxins. But, many people find that once they start making some small changes, their skin softens, they find it is easier to breathe and sleep, and even that their mood improves. Why not give it a try?
