The Alliance Theatre is dedicated to “expanding hearts and minds onstage and off“. Alliance is Atlanta’s national theatre and is the leader in Southeast theatre productions. They have premiered huge musical productions that have made it to Broadway and continue to bring Atlanta some of the best theatrical performances every single year.
Going to the theatre is a great way to immerse yourself in different cultures, studies, music, and arts. It’s one of my favorite past times and a mommy/daughter date night I take very seriously with my own mother. Theatre not only expands your mind to your own experiences but opens you up to the world around you.
The best thing about Alliance Theatre is that they are bringing the arts to Atlanta. Yes, traveling is nice but not everyone has the time, money, or means to do so whenever they please. (We’re also still in a pandemic.) Having a new season of lovely shows come to the city of Atlanta every year means we get to experience the theatre right in our own backyard.
Alliance Theatre has plenty of new shows coming up from 2022 through 2023, including the hilarious world premiere of Trading Places, inspired by the film.

Trading Places: May 25 – June 26, 2022
“Inspired by the beloved film, TRADING PLACES is a hilarious world-premiere musical pitting nature against nurture in a modern-day prince and the pauper story. With the help of a charming and unlikely cast of characters, the pawns team up to take their revenge in a comedic and fitting turn that leaves them forever changed for the better. Set in the 80s decade of shoulder pads and big hair, and reimagined through today’s societal lens, audiences will walk out of the theater “looking good, feeling good.” TRADING PLACES is helmed by an exciting creative team including television and film writer Thomas Lennon (Night at the Museum, Reno 911), musical writing team Alan Zachary & Michael Weiner (First Date), and Tony Award-winning director, Kenny Leon (A Soldier’s Play, A Raisin in the Sun).”

A story about literally biting off more than you can chew, this new musical celebrates the joy of reading and the insatiable appetite for knowledge. Inspired by award-winning children’s book author Oliver Jeffers’ hilarious book, The Incredible Book Eating Boy promises to leave you full!”
EveryBody: September 2 – October 2, 2022 (Use code “SOMEBODY50” at checkout.)
“Described as “one of this country’s most original and illuminating writers” by The New York Times, Pulitzer Prize finalist and Obie Award winner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins has created an irreverent, rollicking, uproarious ride that asks BIG questions of all who see it. In EVERYBODY, Everybody is a happy person, a free person, a person who believes nothing but the best lies ahead. Then Death comes calling, and Everybody must go on a journey to find what has had lasting significance in his lifetime. Inspired by the 15-th century play Everyman, EVERYBODY explores the meaning of life and the roles we play along the way. In keeping with life’s random twists and turns, the play’s performers draw names on stage each night to determine which actor will play each character in that performance. Remixing the archetypal medieval morality play into an explosive experiment of wit and emotion, EVERYBODY is a “sunny, stunning journey from life to death” that “fills the heart in a new and unexpected way” (DC Theatre Scene & The New Yorker). ”

Supported by his beau Dwayne and best friends who serve as his fry crew “The New Wing Order,” the group settles in for a fun night of pre-competition prep. But when a family emergency forces Dwayne’s troubled nephew into the mix, it quickly becomes a recipe for disaster. Suddenly, the first-place trophy isn’t the only thing that Cordell risks losing. The Many Wondrous Realities of Jasmine Starr-Kidd: March 1 – 26, 2023

But when she realizes that time travel is a lot easier to figure out than trying to convince her parents to get back together (no matter how many statistics she shows them), she decides to take matters into her own hands. Winner of the 2022/23 Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, THE MANY WONDROUS REALITIES OF JASMINE STARR-KIDD is a heartwarming story of second chances and learning that sometimes the things you can’t change are the things that should have happened all along.”
The Boy Who Kissed The Sky: April 1 – 16, 2023
“Set in the heart of Seattle to the rhythms that shaped a generation, THE BOY WHO KISSED THE SKY is inspired by the early life and influences of musical icon Jimi Hendrix. In the early era of rock n roll music, we see a young Black boy conjure his creativity as a budding guitarist. Guided by the spirit of music itself, the Boy learns to find harmony inside the challenging noises of his life. Although more mythology than biography, THE BOY WHO KISSED THE SKY is a celebration of our muses and the forces that pull us to be who we are. Told with vibrant music and daring imagination, this new family musical inspires us to dream big when it matters most. Commissioned by Seattle Children’s Theatre in partnership with Alliance Theatre, this highly theatrical play by Idris Goodwin celebrates all the young artists who follow their muse.”
Lonely Planet: April 26 – May 21, 2023

Shop owner Jody becomes increasingly fearful of the world outside and the dangers it poses, refusing to leave his shop. While Carl, his spirited friend, begins filling the store with a variety of mysterious chairs. Written almost 30 years ago, Steven Dietz’s funny, hopeful, and deeply human play continues to ring true as a commentary on the value of friendship and community during uncertain times.”
