If thereās one type of movie I love, itās a horror/ thriller. Wrap it up. Put a bow on it. Add some glitter. If itās a scary movie, Iām going to watch it. Add a huge splash of Black comedy in the mix, and youāve got me hooked and ready for the sequel before opening day.
I donāt know if itās just me, but Iāve dubbed a specific genre of movies āblack people moviesā. IYKYK. And āThe Blackeningā is now number one on that list. Itās one of the funniest movies Iāve seen in a long time. Thereās nothing like sitting in a room full of Black people and laughing at jokes you know were written specifically for you.
The tagline āWe Canāt All Die Firstā is honestly all I needed to see to know this movie was going to be right up my alley. Itās a great call out to every Black person in a horror movie being the first one to die. Clearly, weāre all quite sick of it. The masked killer in this cabin-in-the-woods thriller takes that trope and turns it into a game of āWhoās the Blackest?ā where no one truly wins.
There are way more laughs than thrills, but this comedic horror does its job and then some. Donāt be fooled, though. There are a few jump scares that might have you screaming out in the theater. But donāt let that deter you if you arenāt a scary movie buff.
āThe Blackeningā puts a lot of things into question and presents the cast with a quandary that tests their āBlack Cardā.
