Human connections are a necessary part of life, and people love to share a piece of themselves with friends or family. But not every aspect of your personal life should be up for public consumption.
Oversharing information is not a prerequisite for bonding. Instead, it can be a recipe for a huge mess if not properly managed. Here are four things you should keep confidential.
Finances
So you just bought a new house, a luxurious sports car, or a boat. Personal purchases are private matters that do not require announcing to the world. Who cares if you bought a planet and named it after your pet? This kind of information is not for public consumption because, apart from your family and close friends, no one else should be privy to where you live or what recreational purchases you’ve just made. Also, never be tempted to share information about your finances as a ploy to learn about another’s financial standing. That strategy could backfire terribly. Don’t be nosey.
Medical Condition
It is a normal human reaction to want to share information about a health condition. Sometimes, you may have to provide information about your health status when filling out relevant personal details at your new job. You have the liberty to ask your employer to keep this information private and away from public consumption. You also have the right to sue an employer who fails to hold up to their end of the agreement. These are instances where you may have to divulge information about your medical condition. Thereafter, if your personal data or health condition becomes public knowledge due to the negligence of a doctor, you are dealing with a different ball game altogether. Another example is when a negligent healthcare professional causes harm to you while delivering treatment. You can rightfully sue them, as well.
Family Problems
If you have ever encountered a person who touts the peaceful nature of their family and vows, you may have dealt with a liar. There is no single family on earth without challenges. Have you considered that you don’t hear enough of such stories because many avoid discussing family problems in the open? It would help if you were mindful of these situations because sharing family problems is awkward and inconsiderate to your family members. No matter how close they may be, nobody has the right to be privy to stories only involved relatives should know about.
Anything Confidential
Maybe your friend deemed you worthy of sharing a personal story and subsequently asked for your silence on the matter. Then just the next minute, that secret information becomes open knowledge. Do you know that your actions (and inactions) can turn you into an untrustworthy person? In other instances, confidential matters such as a legal agreement or a work contract are supposed to remain private. They are not for others, and you should learn to be silent and observe the respect and secrecy that come with them.
